Almost Famous

Okay, since some of you are new to my blog, I thought it would be fun to play a little game. I tell you about my brushes with fame. You tell me about yours. It will be like the blog world's version of 6 degrees of separation...scratch that, 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon.

I am going to do this by age order. (Don't worry this will be really short.)

Okay, so in 1991 my bff at the time Kate Digilormo lived next door to the Guier family. Well, Adam Guier was cast in the movie, The Pistol. It was about Pistol Pete Maravich. I think it was like a Rudy type story. To be honest, I cannot for the life of my remember what the movie was about other than basketball, but it was my first brush with fame. I was hooked for life.

1993 - Saw Luke Perry at the Alamo in San Antonio. This was at the height of his 90210 fame...only problem is that while calling his name (and calling him Dylan) we laughed and said there was no way that was really him. Next day on the radio it was reported he was there taping 8 Seconds. So, again...only a brush with fame.

1996 - We were lucky enough to go to the Olympics in Atlanta in '96 and sitting in our section was Bruce Willis, Demi Moore and fam. The funny thing is, I didn't even notice, but my sister did. (At the time she was in middle school.) Demi Moore had shaved her head for GI Jane. I still to this day don't know how my sister noticed...

2004- I sat in the front row at the Oprah Winfrey show. Show = total bust. Recap show that was taped right after her Favorite Things show. Anyway, Oprah is much, much thinner in person and wasn't what I expected. (Side note, on this trip we went to have drinks at the Hancock Tower and two girls went down to the lobby while Janie and I paid our tab. While in the lobby the other two members of our party met none other than Jerry Springer. Rave reviews on him!)

2006 - Shopped next to Garth Brooks at Williams Sonoma here in Tulsa. Since I didn't want to make him a circus freak, I just pretended to I was really interested in the rice cookers. I have heard nothing but wonderful things about how gracious and friendly he is. Next time I may ask him for a picture.

Okay, so that is really it for me. Other fun facts:

1- My cousin was one of the guys dressed up like Eminiem in his Real Slim Shady video.
2- One my high school classmate's dad is Frank Abagnale, who was the main character in Catch Me if You Can (with Leo DiCaprio).
3- My friend Mindy is friends with Ed (Jillian's ex-fiance) from the Bachelor. She also recently met Joey from the Real World.
4- My friend Janie volunteers at Texas Children's Hospital with Shannon of Bachelor Season 1 Alex Michel.

I need details, people. Fill me in on every last thing! Dying!!!

PS - I am too lazy to proof this, so I apologize for any errors. I hope the grammar police don't come out.

  1. Good ole' Jerry Springer! That was nuts---and he was right, we were waaayyy to classy to go to his show! While in Vegas I saw none other than the rapper Fat Joe and Montel Williams. I basically started to chase Montel (who was waayyy thinner than I'd imagined) and was stopped by a friend.

  2. I don't remember all the dates like you do, but here goes:

When I was in high school, the rap group Fat Boys were in town for a concert and I saw them at McDonalds.

I interned for a radio station in college and met a lot of people there - Fresh Prince & DJ Jazzy Jeff, Terrance Trent D'Arby, John Bobbit (he was SO gross!), Michael Bolton, Clay Walker, Def Leppard (Joe Elliott was NOT a nice guy, but I still love their music), New Kids on the Block, Stevie B...I know there were many more, but I can't think of them all right now.

I was at Atlantis in the Bahamas 2 years ago and Bobby FLay was standing in line ahead of me to fax something at the front desk. He's much shorter in person.

I was on the Rachael Ray show a few months ago. I didn't officially meet Rachael, but I spoke to her on camera and then got to meet Dr. Ian Smith from Celebrity Fit Club.

I think there were a few more I've met/brushed with, but my brain isn't working right now. :)

  4. Hi Katie!

Big Boi and Andre of Outkast crashed our formal in Kansas City when I was a sophomore in college (1999 I think?).

Also, a group of us who went on a bachelorette party in Chicago in 2005 saw Wendall (red-headed bachelor on Jen's season) on a Friday night at Cafe Baba Reba, and then saw Jen Schreft (the bachelorette) the next night at a club.

Later that summer, Greg and I saw CT from The Real World when we were on vacation in Boston.

I wish I would see more celebrities instead of reality TV stars.

  5. Mine are weak. I sat at a black tie dinner this past April with a (hot) guy who was an extra in the Butterfly Effect.

And I had front row tickets to DMB for my first show ever and, no kidding, Dave really smiled at me. True story! We've been in love for over a decade since!

  6. Hmmm.. I don't think I've had too many celeb sightings, which is weird, considering how awesome I am. j/k! :)

I've seen Garth Brooks and Tricia Yearwood at In the Raw multiple times..
I saw Scott Wolf (and we made eye contact!) at The Grove in California a few years back..
Saw Tori Spelling and her first husband in NYC at a restaurant- he was totally checking me out (NOT cute, though) and a few days later the story broke that they were divorcing. Draw whatever conclusions you wish..

That's all I can think of! Does this get me to Kevin Bacon ??

  7. I literally bumped into Ted Kennedy (RIP) while visiting The Capital, I saw Garth and Trisha at Fleet Feet in Tulsa, passed Mike Tyson on the street in Vegas and stood at the check-out counter of Restoration Hardware in Wichita with Kirstie Alley.

Katie E. – my husband would so jealous of your Outkast run-in! He has had a few brushes with fame himself. He’s met and had pictures taken with Jessica Simpson, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie – lucky boy!

  9. Let's see...Billy Joel back when i was in high school - he was walking down the street in New Orleans with his "entourage" of about 8 people (totally NOT conspicuious or anything!); about 10 years ago I met Garth Brooks at The Delta restaurant in Tulsa (got an autograph, acted like total dork but he was super friendly); in the last few years (during the Shreveport Movie-making boom) I've seen Samuel L. Jackson at Brookshire Brothers grocery buying fish, and Keifer Sutherland up close at the baggage terminal in the Shreveport Regional Airport (he's very very cute, but super short). Friends of mine saw Ben & Jen Affleck/Garner and their kids at the park right by my house, but I never happened to be there when they were. Bummer. Also, many friends have seen/met lots of the big stars around here during filmings: Katie Holmes (Target & Ladies in Waiting), Meg Ryan (Brookshires), Demi Moore & Ashton Kutcher (Superior Steakhouse), Nicolas Cage (lots of restaurants), Kevin Costner (Bella Fresca restaurant), and lots more.

  10. Holy moley! I love this post! Okay, here it goes...

Although not that exciting, my sister and I saw and "chatted" with Pauly Shore at a mall in LA.

After seeing a play in London, my friend and I went across the street to another play that was letting out where I met and got an autograph from Matthew Perry (fresh off the finale of Friends) and Minnie Driver.

And the BIG BANG! While in Las Vegas, circa 2003, at the Hard Rock Hotel round about 2:00 am I saw and then patiently waited outside the men's room to meet VINCE VAUGHN. (Very, very tall and HOT!) This was just after Old School. He was incredibly nice and incredibly drunk. We got a pic together, and then I went to gamble at a black jack table. To make a long story short, I was sitting by his manager who loaned me $20 to stay in the game, and VV came and sat next to us. The next night, we went to the Ghost Bar and I saw the manager again. He remembered me, and my friend and I spent the evening with him and Vince Vaughn in the VIP room. AWESOME! (Totally clean by the way.)

Adrian Peterson before he was PRO. Bob Stoops and Taylor Mali (you may not know this person...he is big on the performance poetry circuit!)

Mandy Moore at her concert in Dallas. SHE IS BEAUTIFUL!

    Other tid bits:
-My husband has met John Elway, Troy Aikman, Steve Nash, Dirk Novitsky, John Bell (Widespread Panic), the janitor on Scrubs, Wayman Tisdale, so these are by association. :)

-his buddy lived across the street from Frank Abagnale (ha!)

  11. Sorry! Another post...

I also attended the wedding of a sorority sister of mine for which Jessica Simpson was the maid of honor. She had just gotten engaged to Nick Lachey. Her diamond was ridiculous!

She was SUPER orangey tan and she was very short (even in heels) and her hair was ultra blonde, but she was still BEAUTIFUL!

Oh, and when I was about 10 my family went to brunch at the Plaza hotel in NY. There we saw Whoopi Goldberg and Ted Danson (before he divorced his wife...hmmm) eating together.

    That's it. I promise.

  12. O.M.G. I am going to have to blog about this myself...I am just way too famous to keep it to myself. Just to dangle a carrot....um, yeah, I have eaten crab legs caught by The Cornelia Marie AND caught by Captain Phil (God Rest his soul).

And, Katie, another gal I was volunteering with (not at Texas Children's.....TCH for those in the know) is an OU Chi O Alum and Frank Abagnale is speaking at an event in Houston and I totally name dropped. She was so impressed of my connection! It was all good, though. She already pimped me out that my dad was the dentist to Sam Bradford and his family back in the day.

    So fun!

  13. OK, Katie....the reality show Deadliest Catch (On A&E? It's really good), well one of the ships is the Cornelia Marie. Not the most popular ship, but the second (I think) biggest earner, so it got a ton of face time. Anyway, so Truluck's (Behind my house) had Alaskan King Crab Legs caught by The Cornelia Marie. Kiiiinda big deal round these parts. And by "parts" I mean "all of America". And Captain Phil was a father of a one guy on the ship (I think he has more than one son though), but he had a heart attack in January, and the film crew 'caught' (a thank you) everything on camera. They even featured him on the 'In Memory Of" part of the Emmy's.....

So, yeah, I am a big deal.

    And the crab was deeeeee-lish.

    Jane

  14. I ran into Adrian Petersen in Vegas for my bachelorette party! We got a picture with him and he told me congratulations! Having gone to OU during his time there, it was a pretty big deal and my husband was SUPER jealous!
