The fattened calves
For those of you who have never seen me in person, I am a bit on the short side. 5’0” to be exact. I have never bought the tall boots that all the trendy people wear. One, because I am not that trendy and didn’t know how they would look on me. Two, because I have the HUGEST calves known to man.
Case in point, this weekend my sister talked me into buying my first pair of skinny jeans (I told you I am not trendy) and I wanted to get a pair of the tall boots to tuck them into. I go to Nordstrom and pick out boots with the biggest calf area thinking that I have just had bad luck in the past. Yeah, it’s not so much bad luck as it is having the biggest calves known to man. (There might have been blushing and humiliation when I had to tell the poor guy helping me that there was no way I could get those puppies to zip. But I am over it now. Kind of.)
So anyway, I need your help – are any of these “wide calf” boots from Zappos cute? (You really minimize your selection when you search for wide calf. Couldn’t they call it something more flattering? Like not so petite opening?)

Okay and that is pretty much it. I am not kidding. Unless I want to spend several hundred dollars. I am thinking $150 or less. Is that asking too much? (That is not a rhetorical question.)
I am already thinking of what tall boots would mean – leggings, more skinny jeans, the ability to actually wear skirts and dresses in the winter. Sigh. Any help would be appreciated!
I'm loving both, but think I love the first pair even more. :) I still haven't given the jeans tucked inside the boots a try. I just bought my first skinny pair of jeans about a month ago. Never looked at them before, because lord knows nothing about me is skinny. However, I do like them, but now need boots. I've never tried Zappos...may have to wonder over there and see what they have. Thanks for sharing these!
ReplyDeleteI think they're both cute! The first pair would go great with skinny jeans and leggings. The second pair would look great with dresses and skirts.
ReplyDeleteI like the first pair!
ReplyDeleteI like the first pair for what you're going for. Also, DSW typically has a selection of wide-calf tall boots (clearly I've searched this myself).
ReplyDeleteHi, Katie,
ReplyDeleteI like the flat heels and think they would be really cute on you!!
Love, Aunt Angie
I like the first paid.
ReplyDeleteOf these, love the first one. but i also LOVE piperlime.com (owned by Gap) and they have a whole page of "extended calf" styles. sounds nicer, right? check it out here: http://piperlime.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=59728

Both are cute but I'm leaning towards the first pair!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the first pair. You'll be able to wear them with more and will probably go better with the skinnies! I can see them on you now...
ReplyDeleteI like the first pair the best! But I'm a flats kinda girl... either would be cute!
ReplyDeleteI really like the first pair, but I'm a flat boot kinda gal. They would be better to wear over skinny jeans in my opinion. DSW also has a pair I've been wanting that I noticed seemed really wide in the calf when I tried them on. They were MIA brand and super simple in black and brown. Might check there so you can try them on.
ReplyDeleteI too have large calves! I got mine a couple of years ago at payless! The selection was limited but also cheap!!
ReplyDelete150 or under is totally reasonable. My vote is for the first pair too!
ReplyDelete:) your title cracked me up. Boots are hard! I feel your pain, but in an opposite sort of way.. as a person living without any real lower leg muscles to speak of (I spent the better part of my teen years doing calf raises. No dice), I know the pain of ill-fitting boots. Only mine tend to look like I'm packing heat and/or my lunch in them. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteI vote for the first pair!
Oh! And I had a friend in college who would take her boots to shoe repair place to have them let out or something.. sort of like boot tailoring?? I dunno, probably too much work, but worth mentioning!
This made me laugh...I feel like I need a large thigh skinny jean...ha ha! Especially after having little Maddie ;-)
ReplyDeleteI would totally go with #1...it would be the most versatile and is just plain fabulous! You will look so fashionable in your skinny jeans and riding boots!
XOXO
Katie! Your blog just kills me - you are so cute! Ok...since you are as thrifty as me (read...sounds nicer than cheap!) i prefer the jeggings from Old Navy (denim look for $15) easy to tuck into boots and I just bought some boots from Stein Mart yesterday and could hardly believe it - paid $55 a pair for them. So I bought them in black and grey. I like the idea of the payless boot too - might have to check those out. I have owned both expensive and cheap boots and since styles tend to change, it's nice to be able to buy a new pair or two each year if you want. sorry I can't sympathize with you on the calf issue - I will be taking mine to the shoe hospital on Monday to have the calves taken IN - so they fit tighter :) Despite years of calf raises and running many miles, they are still pathetic. Did a 10 mile run Saturday and yet the calves still look like they shouldn't be able to support my 3-baby bearing waistline. Go figure. Sorry to miss you girls in Dallas last weekend!!! love, Jennifer
ReplyDeletehaha.. You crack me up, girl. I love both pairs, but I love the first ones more b/c I'm digging the buckles! Plus, I got some cute boots with a little heel last year and I never wear them now that I have my flatter ones. I mean, think of all the times you'll wear those flat boots... you could wear them in crappy weather to go out and still look adorable. The heel? Likely not. I dont see how on earth you have big calves btw! You are so tiny!
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's that you have thick legs... I think it's that the boots hit you to high on your leg, due to height. I think they just hit other people lower on the leg and it hasn't reached their thick meaty calf. Ankle boots with skinny jeans might be cute too! Also saw some cute boots at target for like $40 and they had a small buckle at the top to take in or let out width at the top of the boot. Cant wait to see the new look!!!

I was going to make a similar comment as Iris. I think most boots are made for longer limbed girls. My legs are short so my calves hit lower in the boots than they should. Not fair!!
ReplyDeleteI have the same issue. Target has some cute boots online that are supposed to be similar to the "Melissa" that Frye makes. Our store had a few pairs recently (a return probably) that I tried on and they fit really well in the calve area. But they weren't my size. :( Let me know what you find, because I am still in the market myself. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for this post. Extra Wide calf boots can be really hard to find. I love the first pair most because tall boots over skinny jeans! Its such a cute look!
