Holden’s Newborn Pics

So we are on round two of illness around here. That’s always fun.  Emmy has a cold and fever, and the cold has been passed to the baby. So while she is watching Doc McStuffins, I thought I would upload Holden’s newborn pics taken by Lindsay McDaniel.

Holden seriously slept like 22 hours a day until the day that Lindsay came to take these pics. Ha! It took probably an hour and a half to get him to sleep, but he was a trooper.  Emmy on the other hand… Just know looks can be deceiving Winking smile!

This was the image we used on our Christmas card.

This one is really sweet too:

He looks so cute in a bow tie!

This was the picture on the back of our card with his announcement – one advantage of having a baby in December – you can use your Christmas card for double duty!

We did get one baby smile!

And this was when it all went downhill! At least Tommy and I were smiling. Ha!

Some Faves

First, I changed my commenting settings since so many people (all two of you) were having issues commenting on my blog, so hopefully this makes it easier for everyone to leave a message or ask a question.

With it being about 2 degrees below zero, Holden and I are hanging at home today.  I thought I would post some of my current favorite things – both baby and otherwise!

Favorite Snacks:

Since I love a good snack and with that being one of the easiest things to eat right now, here are my top 2. (I can’t promise nutritional value.)

OMG – Cinnamon Glazed Pecans from Target are AMAZING. Ladies, you must try these. Assuming you like nuts. Like at all. I love to get those nuts from street fairs where they smell of sugar and cinnamon for about a mile. That is what these taste like. And for an extra treat, mix some semisweet chocolate chips in with them. You will thank me.

For my neighbor gifts for Christmas, I wanted to make a s’mores snack mix, but needed something easy seeing as I had an infant child. (Side note, my niece kept calling Holden Baby Jesus all throughout the holiday season – hilarious.) So I took to pinterest and made this s’mores mix. I was too lazy to actually melt the white chocolate, so I just adapted the recipe by dumping golden grahams, white chocolate, semi sweet chocolate chips and the freeze dried mini marshmallows into a bowl and serving that up. It was a huge hit!

Moving on to baby related items. Let’s talk diaper rash (totally appropriate after a food post, no?). Holden was rocking a diaper rash, which I didn’t think was possible in a newborn, but apparently is since he has a very regular system (too much sharing)? I tried my go-to with Emmy, which is maximum strength Desitin with no results. My friend Jane recommended Triple Paste Diaper Rash Cream and the rash was gone within 12 hours, so I give this a highly recommend.

Another baby item that I have liked are the Dr. Brown’s Breast Milk Storage bag. (I have now used the word “breast” more times than I care to on this blog.) Anyway, with Emmy I had leakage problems with the Nuk, Lansinoh and Medela brands, so I wanted to try something else. I haven’t defrosted these yet, but the thickness of these is far superior to the others I tried.

Favorite pants for my mom wardrobe Champion C9 from Target (I don’t do high dollar athletic wear….however, the $40 price tag might lead you to think otherwise – this mama buys on sale!) While on maternity leave, I am 100% rocking the stay at home mom athletic wear wardrobe. Ironic, of course, since I haven’t seen the inside of a gym in about 9 months, but that is neither here nor there.

Right now in store they have these $40 pants marked down to $30 and you can text for a mobile coupon to get an additional $5, making them $25. I love the fitted pants and they come in short, which is super helpful because I can never find athletic pants that don’t need to be hemmed, which seems totally ridiculous.

And since we are on the topic of working out, I did get the new FitBit Charge for Christmas and I am loving it. I also now know that I live a very sedentary lifestyle. I am hoping that once I go back to work, it will be easier for me to include gym time into my routine. Right now it is a challenge to reach 5000 steps a day, as I am reminded a lot.

I especially love how it tracks my sleep and gives me an excuse to be totally grumpy when I show my family that I only got 5.5 hours of sleep. :) Or makes me put on my big girl panties when I see that I somehow got 7.5 hours (though it felt like about 2).

If anyone has a fitbit, do you know how to add breast feeding to my calorie burn on this? I am looking for any excuse to eat extra during the day to meet my goal!

Now that you can hopefully comment easily on my blog, let me know some of your favorites!

Christmas 2014

We had a different, but good Christmas season this year! I thought Emmy might be a little cheated (not that she would know) on all of the activities that we would typically participate in since we would have a newborn, but I rallied and we still did so many fun things!

The night of Thanksgiving, we took Emmy to see Rhema’s lights. She LOVED it and kept calling them the colors. Her favorites were the pinks and oranges!

We also went back a few weeks before Christmas with my sister and her family.

I had great intentions of an advent calendar with daily activities or books, but she was really still too young to care or notice, so that went out the window. This was the list… some of these happened and many did not!

We also drove around one evening to see Christmas lights and Emmy loved having sips of my decaf white mocha. She now asks for a sip anytime she sees me with a Starbucks cup!

Emmy also got her own tree that she could touch and decorate. She was so proud to show it off when guests came over!

We also went to the Tulsa Christmas Parade and she LOVED it! She loved the drummers and dancing! She still talks about it! It was also amazing weather or we totally wouldn’t have gone! I think it was 60 degrees.

We also made cookies with all of the cousins a few days before Christmas and, of course, had donuts with Santa:

Emmy also LOVED the book the Polar Express and was lucky enough to ride it! She had a blast and will tell people she got a bell from Santa. :)

Her first hot chocolate:

On Christmas Eve, we had breakfast and opened gifts at my mom’s. She loved her new train set from Sue Sue and that was a huge hit! That evening we went to church and then to Aunt Kristen’s. That is when things got “interesting.”

Our sweet girl, who has never thrown up in her 2+ years of life, asked if she got a present, opened it (a disney hair kit that she loved) and the proceeded to throw up all over my sister-in-law’s floor. Poor baby! I was holding Holden and in total shock, my sister whipped Emmy up, got her to the bathroom, stripped her down and held her hair like any good sorority girl would and took care of her. I felt terrible that everyone had been exposed and scooped her up and took her straight to the car.

She got sick one more time and then was fine the next day… We decided not to take her around any of the other kids on Christmas and, luckily didn’t, because she threw up at 4 and 10 on Christmas Day, but played great in between. The lovely virus was passed to Kristen’s kids, my mom, Tommy and a very mild version to me (I thankfully never got sick…just didn’t feel great). Somehow since my sister won the merit badge of super sister managed to make it out unscathed, thankfully. It was a different Christmas celebrating in shifts at Tommy’s parents, but we still had a great day and Emmy loved being able to play with all of her toys.

On Christmas morning, she loved her stocking and would get so excited and be so thankful for the gifts she opened. Her favorites from us were play doh, her pretend coffee maker and pretend toaster! Holden also had a few presents from Santa under the tree that I am sure he will like when he is older – a mobile for his crib, a tractor and a fire engine!

Holden–One Month

We have had a great month with our sweet little guy! He has the best demeanor and this experience has been the exact opposite of our experience with Emmy. I am not sure if it is that my expectations are more realistic or if he has just been a dream baby.  I also didn’t have a huge sleep deficit like I did with Emmy, so that has helped.

First car ride home:

Holden is pretty content and is easy to appease if he does get fussy. His likes include:

  • Baths
  • Being held
  • Napping (like his daddy!)
  • Being walked in a carrier
  • Laying on his back and looking at his play mat

Dislikes include:

  • Diaper changes
  • Being buckled into his car seat

For the first two weeks Holden was never awake, but knew his nights and days immediately, which was nice.  He still eats every three hours and has only given us a handful of 4.5 hour stretches at night, but we have been super lucky that after he eats he usually goes straight back to sleep.  He is still sleeping in our room in a bassinet so I don’t have to go across the house for his feedings.

His first week home from the hospital (sleeping, per usual):

One month old:

His current schedule has him waking for the day between 6-7:30 and staying awake for a couple of hours, then napping (between 3-hour feedings) until about 4ish. He will be awake for a little while and then go back to sleep until around 8:30 and I will keep him up until his last feeding in hopes that will get me some extra snooze time.

This baby is a smiler! He smiles in his sleep and he smiles when he makes eye contact with you. It is just heart melting!

He has moved from some newborn sleepers to 3 month sleepers, and can wear both newborn and size 1 diapers.

As for big sister….she loooves her brother!

She loves to hold him, comforts him when he is crying, always asks where he is, is a huge helper by bringing me diapers, wipes, etc. She is an excellent big sister.

All that said, she has had some epic tantrums that I am sure have to do with her huge life change, so that has been my biggest challenge. He is a cake walk – toddler, notsomuch.

So that sums up our month! I will write more about our Christmas. We had a great time celebrating despite a horrid stomach virus sweeping our (and our cousin’s) household.  Here are some sneak peeks of his professional pics:

(Don’t let this sweet pic fool you – it was a Christmas miracle to get this!)

Happy new year!

Edited to add (so I won’t forget):

Biggest learning curve:

The Male Anatomy. I thought diaper changes would be much easier with less crevices to deal with. Not the case. Also, nothing will ever prepare me for the deer in headlights shock that happens daily when the “sprinkler” goes off! You would think I would learn how to keep it covered!
